1. What is TKTX?

Mar 3, 2026 TKTXtattoo

Active Ingredients

Most TKTX variants contain a combination of:

  • Lidocaine: Blocks pain signals at the nerve endings.

  • Prilocaine: Extends the duration of the numbing effect.

  • Epinephrine: A vasoconstrictor that reduces bleeding and swelling (found in some "Fast Numb" versions).

2. The Risks and "Tattoo Artist Disapproval"

It is important to know that many professional tattoo artists dislike the use of TKTX. Here is why:

  • Skin Texture Changes: High-concentration numbing creams can make the skin "rubbery" or overly tough. This makes it harder for the needle to penetrate and for the ink to saturate properly.

  • Healing Issues: Because the cream affects blood flow, the healing process can sometimes be slower, leading to scabbing or faded ink.

  • Safety Concerns: The FDA has issued warnings because TKTX often contains more than 5% Lidocaine, which can lead to systemic toxicity (heart palpitations or seizures) if applied over too large an area for too long.

3. How to Use TKTX Correctly

If you and your artist agree to use it, follow these steps to ensure it works effectively:

  1. Clean the area: Wash the skin with warm soapy water to open the pores.

  2. Apply a thick layer: Do not rub it in like lotion. It should be about 2-3mm thick.

  3. Wrap with Plastic Film: Cover the area tightly with plastic wrap (Saran wrap). This prevents evaporation and forces the cream into the skin.

  4. Wait: Leave it on for 50–90 minutes before the session starts.

  5. Wipe Clean: Your artist must wipe it off completely before they begin tattooing.

4. Understanding the Color Codes

TKTX comes in various colors (Gold, Black, Red, Green, etc.). While marketing suggests different strengths, the differences are often minimal:

  • Gold/Black: Usually marketed as the "strongest" for deep numbing.

  • Green: Often contains a higher percentage of Lidocaine for faster onset.

  • Red: Typically used for long-duration sessions.

Important Safety Checklist

[!CAUTION]

  • Patch Test: Always test a small amount on your skin 24 hours before your appointment to check for allergic reactions.

  • Stay Hydrated: Numbing creams can sometimes cause a "crash" when they wear off; staying hydrated helps manage the pain transition.

  • Consult your Artist: Never show up to an appointment with numbing cream already applied without telling your artist first.
